  7. Description: Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, County Dublin, has been at the centre of Irish Religion and Politics for hundreds of years and dominates the streetscape in medieval Dublin next to Wood Quay. It is officially claimed as the seat (cathedral) of both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic Archbishops of Dublin. In practice, it has been the cathedral of only the Church of Ireland's Archbishop of Dublin, since the English Reformation. Though nominally claimed as his cathedral, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin uses St Mary's in Marlborough Street in Dublin as his pro-cathedral (acting cathedral).

  12. Description: The diving boards at Blackrock, Salthill are on the edge of Galway City, and are one of my favourite places in Ireland. Tall concrete diving platforms stretch out into Galway Bay off the craggy Blackrock, which marks the end of one of Europe's longest promenades, which weaves its way into Galway City. You’ll forgive me for exercising at little bit of 'Artistic License' in the picture, the person mid dive is the father of a friend, captured way back in the 1960's, and for me typifies the coolness of this iconic West of Ireland scene.

  14. Description: There's a little bit of artistic licence in 'By Hook or by Crook' as they are actually miles apart... It's thought the expression dates from the days of the first Norman invasions of Ireland, when rudimentary sailing boats left from Bristol or Pembroke bound for Ireland. The first Norman king of Ireland was Richard III. Back in his day, depending on the weather, the voyage to Ireland could be extremely hazardous and many ships didn’t make it. For the Normans, the two most extreme points on the Irish southern coast with harbour's where they could possibly dock were Hook Head in Wexford to the east, and Crookhaven in Cork to the west. If you failed to make land between Hook and Crook, you were going off towards the wild Atlantic and the treacherous west coast, where the seas were huge, the ports few, and the native Irish not too friendly to the hapless Normans. Therefore, the Normans vowed to land in Ireland “by hook or by crook” and deploy any means necessary to do so, because to miss the stretch between Hook Head and Crookhaven meant the voyage was a total failure.
